diy: gem headband

diy gem headband | south by north

Here is a little tutorial on how to make this snazz-o-rama headband. It’s perfect for the party season, or just for wearing with your pyjamas.

You will need:

– a strip of clear vinyl
– assorted gems with a flat back
– glue gun
– scissors
– hole punch
– needle and thread
– a few elastic hair ties

Before we start, let’s just stop for a moment and recognise that I now own a glue gun. Yeah sure, it may have been $7 from the dollar store, but still. This crafty stuff is getting REAL.

Right, on to the important stuff…instructions.

Firstly, you need to cut the strip of vinyl to fit your head. I had mine go from behind the middle of each ear. Thickness depends on the size of your gems – mine is about two centimetres. Once you have cut the strip, use your hole-puncher to punch a hole near each end.

Now you need to decide where to place your gems! I laid mine out next to the vinyl strip so that I could get the spacing right. Then just take your glue gun (serious crafting about to happen), add a dot of glue to the back of a gem and stick it down firmly.

Wait for the glue to dry completely and be sure to remove those pesky glue gun strands that seem to get all over everything. Now take two of the hair elastics, and loop them through the holes at each end of the plastic, like the picture below.

If you have a small head you can skip the next step. If you have a big head like me, loop another hair elastic, so that you have two on one side, and one on the other. I like to wear my headbands quite loose, so if you like them snug you probably will only need two hair elastics.

The next step is to sew up the two ends of the hair elastics. Make sure that the needle is going through the actual elastic and not just the outer material. Keep sewing until it seems like it won’t break when you pull on it.
